چکیده

The minimal standard deviations achievable for concurrent estimates of thresholds and psychometric function slopes as well as the optimal target values for adaptive procedures were calculated as functions of stimulus levels and track length on the basis of the binomial theory. Two approaches to adaptive procedures that converge at the optimal target values were introduced and tested with Monte–Carlo simulations. Both approaches utilize the fact that in some psychophysical tasks more than one statistically independent Bernoulli trial is performed per trial, as it is done, e.g., in sentence intelligibity tests that score each word separately. The first approach is a generalization of the adaptive procedure for sentence tests proposed by Hagerman and Kinnefors (1995). The second approach is a modification of the transformed up/down procedures proposed by Levitt (1971). The first approach yields higher efficiency. When the target discrimination value at which the adaptive procedure should converge is set to 50 %, a biasfree SRT estimate with a standard deviation only about 1.3 times higher than the theoretically optimally achievable value is reached using 20 trials. When the adaptive procedure converges at the target discrimination values 20 and 80 % in a randomized interleaved order, it achieves standard deviations in both SRT and slope estimates which are about 1.5 times higher than the optimal achievable values, with a small bias in slope estimates, using 30 trials. The adaptive procedures according to Hagerman and Kinnefors were evaluated

Observation of time-dependent psychophysical functions and accounting for threshold drifts

Methods to obtain estimates of psychophysical functions are used in numerous fields, such as audiology, vision, and pain. Neurophysiological and psychological processes underlying this function are assumed to remain stationary throughout a psychophysical experiment. However, violation of this assumption (e.g., due to habituation or changing decisional factors) likely affects the estimates of ps...

Psychophysical metrics and speech recognition in cochlear implant users.

Intersubject variability in perception is a prominent characteristic of people with cochlear implants. This study characterized intersubject differences using simple metrics based on psychophysical measures: maximum comfortable loudness levels (C levels) and dynamic ranges (DRs). In a group of 17 subjects, we assessed across-site variation (ASV) and across-site mean (ASM) values of C levels and...

Optimization of Radiological Protection in Pediatric Patients Undergoing Common Conventional Radiological Procedures: Effectiveness of Increasing the Film to Focus Distance (FFD)

Background Increasing the x-ray film to focus distance (FFD), has been recommended as a practical dose optimization tool for patients undergoing conventional radiological procedures. In the previous study, we demonstrated a 32% reduction in absorbed dose is achievable due to increasing the FFD from 100 to 130 cm during pediatric chest radiography. The aim of this study was to examine whether in...

Improving Voice Outcomes After Injury to the Recurrent Laryngeal Nerve

Objectives: The present study aimed to determine the voice outcomes before and after the administration of voice therapy in patients who suffered an injury to the recurrent laryngeal nerve after undergoing thyroidectomy. Methods: The sample consisted of 26 patients (2 males and 24 females) aged between 18 and 80 years (m=55±12) who experienced injury to the recurrent laryngeal nerve fol...

The Comparison of Direct and Indirect Optimization Techniques in Equilibrium Analysis of Multibody Dynamic Systems

The present paper describes a set of procedures for the solution of nonlinear static-equilibrium problems in the complex multibody mechanical systems. To find the equilibrium position of the system, five optimization techniques are used to minimize the total potential energy of the system. Comparisons are made between these techniques. A computer program is developed to evaluate the equality co...
